Lukas Schulze to become a jury member and mentor for the ‘Young Photographers presented by Nikon’ programme
From 30 January 2025, young talents between the ages of 18 and 25 can apply for the ‘Young Photographers presented by Nikon’ programme. As Official Supporter Partner of the Rhine-Ruhr 2025 FISU World University Games, Nikon not only provides participants with high-quality camera equipment, but also offers professional training and exclusive insights into the world of sports photography. A special highlight: experienced sports photographer Lukas Schulze (32) from Bergisch Gladbach will select the ten most talented young photographers as a jury member and accompany them as a mentor during the multi-sport event.
From hobby to career: Lukas Schulze's path into sports photography
Lukas Schulze grew up in a sports-loving family - as a child he played football and ran athletics. An injury led him to change his perspective: instead of being active himself, he began photographing competitions. His pictures quickly became popular, and with the income he was able to afford better and better equipment - the first step towards a professional career.
His first sporting event as a photographer was the athletics competitions organised by his home club. However, he particularly remembers his first assignment in the new stadium of 1. FC Magdeburg: ‘That was a real highlight!’ he recalls.
Sport, action & the perfect shot
Lukas is particularly fascinated by athletics and handball. ‘Athletics is extremely versatile, as there are so many different disciplines that are exciting to photograph. And handball? It's pure action and dynamism!’ he enthuses.
His photographic style is characterised by the targeted use of fixed focal lengths and large apertures. ‘This allows me to perfectly separate the subject from the background and focus on the essentials.’
What makes a good sports photographer?
According to Lukas, there are three essential qualities:
Technical expertise: the camera must be able to be operated blindfolded.
Sporting understanding: If you know the processes of a sport, you can better anticipate the perfect moment.
Empathy: Recognising emotions and capturing them at the right moment.
Why sports photography is so exciting
‘No two days are the same! Every event brings new challenges and it's all about capturing the perfect moment. That's what makes this job so fascinating,’ says Lukas.
Apply now and be part of it! All young photography talents between the ages of 18 and 25 can apply for the ‘Young Photographers presented by Nikon’ programme until 28 February 2025. Further information and application details can be found here.
