CITY OF PLAY – The City as a Playground
Art, play, and community at the heart of the city: this is City of Play. City of Play transforms public spaces in Mülheim an der Ruhr, Duisburg, and Essen into creative venues for experience and exchange. Between May and July 2025, temporary Playgrounds will emerge – open stages for art, play, and cultural interaction. Visitors are invited not just to observe, but to actively participate.
Three cities. Three creative spaces. One shared experience.
The dates:
Mülheim an der Ruhr: 24 May – 8 June 2025
Duisburg: 21 June – 5 July 2025
Essen: 17 July – 27 July 2025
This is City of Play
"The City as a Playground" – under this guiding principle, the city-connecting art and culture programme City of Play is being launched. The project was initiated by the Transurban ComeTogether Projekt e.V. team, supported by the Ministry of Culture and Science of North Rhine-Westphalia (MKW NRW), and embedded within the Rhine-Ruhr 2025 FISU World University Games. City of Play not only strengthens the local cultural scene but also draws attention to the upcoming international sports event.
City of Play brings together art, culture, sports, and science, reimagining public spaces as vibrant venues for encounter, participation, and collective experience.
What can visitors expect?
Each Playground will be uniquely designed and will offer:
Interactive artworks and creative workshops
Events and spontaneous performances
Open spaces for relaxation, discussion, and active participation
City of Play demonstrates the true potential of urban spaces: open, dynamic, and accessible to all.
